ELLENBORO, W.Va. (WBOY) — K-9 Max, who has worked in Ritchie County High School since 2017, has died, the Ritchie County Sheriff's Department announced Thursday.

K-9 Max Jackson, who joined the sheriff's department in 2015 under handler Sgt. Todd Jackson, was 12 years old when he passed away on Sept. 9. During his near 10 years of service with the Ritchie County Sheriff's Department, K-9 Max was a daily presence at Ritchie County High School and Middle School and was "a trusted and beloved figure at the school," the sheriff's department said.

K-9 Max walked the halls daily with Sgt. Jackson, attended sporting events, had his photo taken for yearbooks and even played the role of Sandy in the 2019 Ritchie County High School Theater production of "Annie."
