KINGSTON — The Kingston High School Choir sang The National Anthem, and the Ulster Ancient Order of Hibernians played Amazing Grace on bagpipes during a solemn ceremony Thursday honoring the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001.
When the Twin Towers collapsed, 343 firefighters died. Since then, more than 400 firefighters have succumbed to 9/11-related illnesses.
Led by Kingston Fire Chief Chris Rea and the Kingston Fire Department, the event included tolling of the time when Flight 11 struck the North Tower. “We as a city promised those brave men and women that we would never forget their actions that day, 24 years ago,” said Chief Rea. The ceremony remembering the terrorist attacks during a ceremony at Firemen’s Park, where Washington Avenue meets Hurley Avenue.
