MADISON (WKOW) — The Henry Vilas Zoo is mourning the loss of two cherished animals.

The zoo posted Thursday on social media that Franklin, a 14-year-old meerkat, was humanely euthanized on Aug. 29 after a rapid health decline. Slothra, a 44-year-old Hoffman’s two-toed sloth, passed away on Sept. 8 from natural causes.

"Franklin had a wonderful and full life," the zoo said. He was known for his vocal nature and parenting skills, fathering several offspring since arriving at the zoo in 2018.

Slothra was one of the oldest sloths in any AZA-accredited zoo worldwide. Born at Henry Vilas Zoo in 1981, she was a beloved resident who enjoyed blueberries, her favorite treat.
