Reckless driving is becoming a dangerous norm on major Calgary roadways, and Calgary police warn the city is heading for a record number of fatal crashes.

Sgt. Chris Martin, assigned to patrol District 8 in Calgary’s deep south, said anecdotally that this is the worst year he’s seen in terms of dangerous driving.

“Excessive speeding and extremely aggressive driving that we are starting to see on the entirety of the ring road,” Martin said.

When he first started serving as an officer 14 years ago, Martin said it was rare to record drivers going past 100 km/h speed limits.
