DANVILLE, Ky. — The highest court in Kentucky is set to decide if public dollars in the state should fund charter schools.

The Supreme Court of Kentucky heard oral arguments about the constitutionality of House Bill 9 (HB 9) in Danville, Ky., on Thursday morning.

Counsel on both sides debated if charter schools are considered "common schools" as written into the state's constitution. Charter schools are tuition-free, public schools of choice that are run independently of the public school system.

House Bill 9 indicates that funds would follow the student.

Opponents of the law believe redirecting public funds to non-traditional public schools will take money out of Kentucky's public school system.
