LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A woman is being hailed as a hero after rescuing an 11-year-old girl who had slipped into a lake in south Fort Myers Saturday.

According to NBC affiliate WBBH, just after 10 a.m. Mia Garcia was collecting shells with her little sister at Lakes Park when she slipped and fell into the water.

Bridgett Addison, who was sitting nearby, heard Mia's screams, and immediately rushed to her rescue although she herself did not know how to swim.

"When I looked over, I saw her in the water, so I just ran," said Addison relaying the details to reporters.

Dawn Louchart, Mia's grandmother, told reporters that Mia, who has autism, knows how to swim but struggled to get out because the area was slimy.
