DALLAS, Texas — The family of a Utah man wrongly linked to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is asking the public to stop spreading false claims online.
Zachariah Ahmed Qureshi, 25, was taken into custody as a person of interest shortly after Kirk was shot and killed during a rally at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10 in Orem. He was later released, and law enforcement has publicly said there is no evidence tying him to the killing.
That came after FBI Director Kash Patel had announced that a subject responsible for the shooting was in custody. Patel then advised that the subject, Qureshi, had been released after interrogation.
While Patel didn't name Qureshi, the Utah Department of Safety did in a news release clarifying that he had been questioned and let go.
