(WKBN) -- Sept. 10 marks the peak of hurricane season. This is the day of the year, on average, that is most likely to see a named storm in the Atlantic Basin. This year, the Atlantic is quiet. Sept. 10 has come and gone without any activity in the Gulf, Caribbean Sea, or the Atlantic Ocean.
Based on averages from 1991 through 2020, by Sept. 16, the season's ninth named storm should have formed. From Sept. 11-20 in the years 1851-2024, 211 storms have formed in the Atlantic Basin, and another 90 formed in the Eastern Pacific. You can see their points of origin and tracks below.
Only six storms have formed so far this year, and only one of them, Erin, has become a hurricane. We should be on our fourth hurricane of the season by Sept. 16.
