OXFORD, Ala. ( WBRC ) - We remember the thousands of men and women killed on September 11, 2001 in New York, Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

Some of those victims were from Alabama. First responders in Oxford said there were plenty of lessons learned from that day that led to better equipment and a priority towards their health and safety.

Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sparks says fire crews dealt with bad communication inside the Twin Towers that day. He also pointed to studies that showed some first responders got sick from exposure to ground zero. All of that heartbreak helped reshape the fire service.
