Tawas City — In July, state conservation officers happened upon an abandoned truck in a remote area of the Huron National Forest in northern Michigan. In the truck bed, they found a rug saturated in blood.

An investigation into the vehicle would lead to the arrest of a recent parolee of the Michigan Department of Corrections — 57-year-old Clifford Farthing — who admitted, according to court records, to killing 42-year-old William Jackson, rolling his body in the rug and dumping him in the national forest.
