Woodside’s North West Shelf gas facility has been extended to 2070 following the approval of Environment Minister Murray Watt.
After years of complex approvals surrounding the project’s lifespan, Labor gave the project the greenlight with 48 strict conditions designed to protect 60,000-year-old rock art in the Pilbara region.
Woodside will need to cut emissions at the project, including a 60 per cent reduction in certain gases by 2030, and reach net zero by 2050.
It will also need to establish a new air quality management plan and comply with stricter standards that will help ensure minimal impact on the Murujuga rock art.
