The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for gales and wind at the weekend with speeds reaching as high as 70mph. Residents are being advised the winds could cause disruption to travel and there could be interruptions to power to homes and businesses.

The warning is in place from 8pm on Sunday and 6pm on Monday and is expected to hit coastal areas the worst. All areas in the region, including Darlington , Durham, Hartlepool , Middlesbrough , Redcar and Cleveland and Stockton are all included in the warning.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Strong west or southwesterly winds will arrive across coastal areas of southwest England and Wales during Sunday evening, then develop more widely inland during Monday morning.
