LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Louisville residents rallied at Jefferson Square Park in protest of the no camping provision in House Bill 5 , also known as the Safer Kentucky Act.
The Safer Kentucky Act went into effect on July 15, 2024. The law allows Louisville officers to issue citations or even arrest people for sleeping in a public space.
John Jeffries is unhoused. He said he has seen the consequences of the law and experienced it for himself.
“I’ve lost all of my personal possessions such as IDs and birth certificates all because they come around and do these sweeps where they clear out the areas and they only give you a limited amount of time to gather your possessions or else they’re thrown away and discarded,” Jeffries said.
Jeffries was one of several speakers at the rally on Tuesday.
