The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three people after a small plane crashed in Lake Michigan.

A 45-foot response boat from USCG Station Milwaukee and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City responded after the Cessna aircraft went down at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Crews arrived on the scene and pulled the individuals from the water. The survivors were then transported to EMS.

The aircraft sunk, but is not considered to be a navigational hazard, according to the USCG. “The survivors were able to use their cell phone to text first responders in Milwaukee, who then relayed their position to responding Coast Guard units,” said Chief Donald Hamilton, officer-in-charge of Station Milwaukee.
