In what has become an annual tradition for the Probus Club of Belleville, Mayor Neil Ellis was speaker for the club’s meeting Tuesday in the Gerry Masterson Centre.
“The city has only three sources of revenue,” he said:”taxes, service charges and senior government grants. And we provide 70 per cent of all the essential needs of a community on an inadequate budget.” He agreed the city has benefitted from substantial funds from the federal government but he commented that the provincial government “is not much help.”

He also stresses three crisis-level problems facing the city – doctor shortage, the unhoused and infrastructure maintenance.
The city has a spectacular record of success in recruiting new doctors, thanks to recruiting agent Karen Poste, he affirmed, settin
