BROWNSVILLE — When Eva was born a little too soon, nurses immediately took her to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

“Thank God it was available,” said Ava’s mother Charlotte Ruiz, who gave birth to Eva Valentina Ruiz on Aug. 29 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Brownsville.

September is Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Awareness Month, and the 32-bed NICU at Valley Baptist-Brownsville is ready to receive any babies in need of specialized care.

“Our team is used to managing extremely premature infants,” said Miriam Longoria, RN and director of labor and delivery, obstetric operating rooms, and the mother-baby unit at Valley Baptist-Brownsville.
