ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (WITN) - A man from Honduras is in ICE custody after his arrest this week for poaching on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
Federal authorities say 46-year-old Walter Betancourth was arrested by U.S. Marshals, who then transferred him to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
According to court documents, Cape Hatteras park rangers saw five men overfishing red drum on June 15. The daily fishing limit is one per person, but rangers say Betancourth and others poached 16 fish.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Betancourth was in the country illegally, having been given a final order of removal from the United States back in April 2022.
