GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Green Bay Area Public School District is applying two new strategies they believe will keep students safer.

The first is getting an updated school safety assessment, and the second is changing the backpack policy to clear backpacks only for grades 6 through 12.

This comes as the district says they’re seeing a dip in student attendance after a loaded gun was found at Preble High School on Tuesday.

A 16-year-old student is in police custody and could face multiple charges.

This is what the district is calling the first stage in minimizing risk.

Over 11,000 students will need to get a clear backpack by Monday, September 22.
