To the editor: FAST Planning recently completed Phase 1 of the Transportation Alternatives Program-funded Bike Lane Signing & Striping Pilot Project on 10th Avenue and Barnette Street in downtown Fairbanks. For several weeks, the project offered the community a chance to experience how different types of street spaces can be reorganized to support the movement of people regardless of whether they are biking, walking or driving. The project has now been removed, as planned, but it provided an opportunity to test ideas, collect feedback and learn.

Pilot projects like this are designed to be temporary. Their purpose is to give residents and businesses a chance to experience changes in real life, to share what worked, what didn’t and make some unforeseen discoveries during the limited test ru
