TORONTO -- Credit this win to pitching and defense.
The Blue Jays got another gem out of their staff on Friday night, relying on their brand of baseball to secure a 6-1 win over the Orioles at Rogers Centre. This wasn’t a one-man shutout like Kevin Gausman delivered on Thursday, but it came as another huge step forward for a bullpen looking to prove those late-August struggles were simply a blip.
The way back to reliability is paved one game at a time, and it doesn’t come out of nowhere. During the current homestand, manager John Schneider has spoken about getting back to the fundamentally sound style of play that lifted the Blue Jays to the best record in the American League. That doesn’t pertain solely to the pitching staff, but also to this club’s baserunning and defensive work.
