Payments from Facebook’s historic $725 million privacy settlement are finally reaching users, marking the end of a yearslong legal battle over how the social media giant handled personal data.
The settlement stems from lawsuits accusing Facebook of improperly sharing user information with third parties, including the now-defunct political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, CBS News reported . Meta, Facebook’s parent company, denied wrongdoing but agreed to the payout to avoid a costly trial, according to USA Today .
The settlement covers U.S. users who had an active Facebook account between May 24, 2007, and Dec. 22, 2022, and filed a claim by the August 2023 deadline, USA Today said. Those who missed the cutoff are not eligible for compensation.
