At the beginning of the 2024 thoroughbred racing season, Damario Bynoe said his goal was to become jockey champion at Assiniboia Downs.

He didn’t quite make it last year, finishing second, 10 wins behind Prayven Badrie.

This year, however, he is just nine racing nights away from reaching his goal, as long as he can win a battle against former jockey champion Antonio Whitehall.

With 40 wins, Bynoe and Whitehall are deadlocked at the top of the riders’ standings. Both Whitehall and Bynoe have some solid mounts remaining this season and it will be a battle to the finish to declare a jockey champion.

Interestingly, Bynoe, now 33, lost the 2023 title to Whitehall. That was his first year at ASD, when he had 200 starts and won 41 races, good enough for second place behind Whitehall, who won
