The emergency demolition of the burned-out Jefferson Apartment building did not happen as planned Saturday.

The city told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that utilities are the holdup. Duquesne Light is going through its safety protocols, which include turning off power and shielding equipment that could be affected by the demolition.

Once work begins, demolition could take up to a week. Cleanup will take longer because crews must separate building materials before hauling them away. Crews are expected to work 8- to 10-hour shifts.

People living next door say it’s unsettling to live beside a structure now considered structurally unsound.
