GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (KTVT) - A Texas man who says he believed he was confronting burglars was shot by police officers after they mistakenly arrived at his home due to a 911 dispatch error.

The bullet holes in his garage door are evidence of what Thomas Simpson calls one of the scariest nights of his life. He says around 1:30 a.m. Friday, he thought burglars were outside his Grand Prairie home, so he grabbed his gun and opened his garage door.

Simpson says he dropped the gun immediately upon recognizing police badges.

“I never popped a round off. As soon as the door opened, I saw their badge. I threw the gun to the ground,” he said. “Got shot in the leg. I dropped to the ground, and Grand Prairie PD proceeded to fire about eight rounds after I was on the ground.”
