After speaking with residents at a Huntsville City Council meeting on Thursday evening, Mayor Tommy Battle said that he will soon be canceling a proposed contract with a Tuscaloosa-based tech company specializing in artificial intelligence.

Had the contract been ratified, city garbage trucks would have been equipped with AI cameras from City Detect, something the council believed could be helpful in detecting property violations.

Activists with the North Alabama Area Labor Council (NAALC), AFL-CIO, the local chapter of 50501, and Indivisible disagreed and spoke out against the potential installation of surveillance cameras at the meeting.
