A well-known retired journalist and Fairbanks fixture expressed consternation about the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s Library and Literacy Commission after resigning from the body.

In his resignation letter to Borough Mayor Grier Hopkins, Robert Hannon expressed mixed feelings about leaving, as the commission supports the public library. However, Hannon wrote he had concerns about the commission’s future effectiveness as an advisory group.

“Regrettably, I have come to believe that the current library leadership regards the commission as little more than an inconvenience,” Hannon wrote. “Recent borough-wide changes to commission calendars and structures, in my view, have further diminished the vitality and effectiveness of the Library and Literacy Commission’s deliberations.”
