A state prison inmate died following a weekend assault in William Donaldson Correction Facility.

Antwion Webb, 45, of Birmingham, was critically injured at 11:59 p.m. Friday, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates said Webb sustained a sharp force injury during the assault.

Webb was pronounced dead at the prison at 4:36 a.m.

His death is being investigated as a homicide. No additional details were released.

Webb was charged in 2001 with capital murder during a robbery in Jefferson County.

In 2002, he pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison.

The Alabama Department of Corrections did not immediately respond to a request for more information.
