CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Several organizations in southern Illinois received Library and Literacy Grants through the state on Monday.

Southern Illinois University was awarded more than $27,000 for a library grant, while John A. Logan College and Southtown Youth Programs Center received more than $50,000 in literacy grants. Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias announced a total of $28.3 million for library services and literacy programs throughout the state.

Giannoulias emphasized the importance of supporting libraries, calling them "the cornerstones of our communities."
