LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Ensign Eugene E. Mandeberg, a 23-year-old U.S. Navy Reserve pilot from Detroit, who was killed during World War II, has been officially accounted for, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) announced Monday. He was identified on March 5, 2025.

In the summer of 1945, Mandeberg was assigned to Fighting Squadron 88 aboard the USS Yorktown .

On August 15, 1945, while returning from a mission near Atsugi Airfield on Honshu, Japan, his formation was attacked by enemy fighter planes.

Four of the six U.S. aircraft failed to return to the Yorktown, and Mandeberg was declared Missing in Action. His remains were not recovered or identified at the time.
