Denmark failed to reach the Final 8 of the 2025 Davis Cup in one of the most tormenting ways possible. The Danes lead by 2-0 in their opening day against Spain in Marbella and were also up by a set in the doubles rubber before their defeat. However in match 4, Holger Rune squandered a 5-3 lead in the third set and bottled a decisive match point which would’ve taken Denmark to the Final 8.
He lost a dramatic match 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(7-3) against Pedro Martinez, lasting over three hours, and also refused the customary handshake with the chair umpire. The World No. 11 shook hands with Martinez and initially extended his hand to the chair umpire before quickly withdrawing. Speaking about his behavior, Rune commented:
