Still in contention for three championship trophies this season, Nashville SC will try to take a big step toward securing one of them Tuesday night at Geodis Park.

That’s when NSC will play host to the Philadelphia Union in a U.S. Open Cup semifinal, with the winner advancing to the final — against either Minnesota United or Austin FC — on Oct. 1.

For those not familiar with soccer, the U.S. Open Cup can be a little confusing. It’s played during the course of the MLS regular season, which still has a month remaining.

But tourney has plenty of significance.

This season marks the 110 th U.S. Open Cup, making it the most historic soccer tournament in the country.
