DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — FOR THREE YEARS, a group of adult cyclists in green vests has escorted kids to school every Wednesday along Bergen Street, forming a protective buffer between traffic and young riders, according to Gothamist. The “bike bus” runs from East New York to Downtown Brooklyn, covering four miles and inspired by similar programs in Portland and Barcelona. Parents track its progress online to join en route.

Crash Mapper data shows more than 40 cyclists have been injured along that stretch in the past five years. “You see the look on their faces. It’s just pure joy riding the bikes to school,” volunteer Alex Goulet told Gothamist.
