Summer sessions were especially grueling for Rondout Valley two-way lineman Corwin Derosa.

Like his teammates, Derosa ran long distances. Except, Derosa’s runs included having a 30-plus pound ruck sack on his back, in between marksmanship, field and grenade training.

Derosa, a senior, is a U.S. Army Reservist, who attended 10-week Basic Combat Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina through a program called the Split Option. He hopes to enlist in the Army full-time after graduating in June.

“Football is for a few hours, but basic training was 24/7,” Derosa, 17, said. “You could be woken up at any time to do something. After that, the conditioning at football is like nothing now. I think I am much more disciplined now and for lack of a better word, don’t mind doing the things that suck.
