Sarnia will digitize pictures of past mayors currently hanging on a wall in city hall, and move copies of them elsewhere in the building, to make way for a new welcome mural.

The 5-4 vote came Monday after city council approved the mural project in 2024 , as part of ongoing efforts to advance aspects of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Currently 60 photos of past mayors hang on the south wall in the city hall lobby, taking up most of the space, a report from city chief administrator Chris Carter says.

It’s the only available wall for the $8,500 mural by artist Kennady Rayn, of Seventh Rayn Design Co., contracted more than a year ago to do the mural, Carter said.
