WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives is moving forward with a series of bills aimed at reforming Washington, D.C.'s crime laws, a move that sidesteps the approval of local District government officials. The bills, which passed a key committee vote, are now headed for a full House vote this week.

The four bills, sponsored primarily by Republican lawmakers, target various aspects of D.C.'s criminal justice system. They include:

A bill to reform the D.C. Superior Court judicial appointment process. This legislation would eliminate the D.C. Judicial Nomination Commission and give the President of the United States the sole authority to nominate judges for the city's courts, stripping D.C. officials of their current role in the selection process.
