As she departs for Ukraine and a new post-political life, it is fair to wonder: Is Chrystia Freeland happy?

Maybe. Possibly. And … probably not.

Other questions arise, too: Is Prime Minister Mark Carney wise to nudge Freeland, one of his most-experienced ministers, out the door to some ill-defined diplomatic post ? And, what of the Liberal Party: Is this the proper send-off for the woman who literally saved them from certain defeat?

Because, make no mistake: Chrystia Freeland did. Now travelling in Ukraine with former prime minister Jean Chretien, that is certainly rumoured to be Chretien’s view — that Freeland set in motion the chain of events that led to the departure of Justin Trudeau, and the extraordinary return of the Liberals to power under the aforementioned Carney.
