WILSON, N.C. (WITN) - A Wilson man once praised for his community outreach is now facing murder charges after a shooting Monday that left two people dead and another injured.

The charges come just three days after Chestnut was interviewed by WITN’s Baileigh Bockover for an upcoming “Hometown Hero” segment, which highlights positive efforts in Eastern Carolina.

Chestnut had spoken about mentoring youth and working to prevent gun violence.

“I want to bring the community together and bridge the gap to make sure these type of behaviors don’t happen often,” Chestnut said in the interview. “I know we can’t stop all the violence, but it has been my goal to make a difference.”
