IONIA, Mich. — Over the weekend, nine inmates at the Ionia County Jail were hospitalized and treated for carbon monoxide exposure.
The Ionia County Sheriff's Office said that shortly after midnight on Saturday, Sept 13, jail staff were making routine rounds when they were advised of a chemical smell in one of the jail's housing units.
Inmates in that unit reported not feeling well, and when officers investigated the unit they also noted smelling chemicals.
Officers quickly moved the nine inmates who were in the unit and contacted Ionia Public Safety (IPS). Officers with IPS responded and identified that there was a concentration of carbon monoxide in the unit where the smell was.
Maintenance was contacted and went to identify the source of the carbon monoxide. They found that the leak
