IONIA COUNTY, Mich. (WILX) - Several inmates lodged at the Iona County Jail are receiving medical care after a gas leak over the weekend.

On Saturday, Sept. 13, just after midnight, jail staff received reports of a chemical smell in a jail housing unit. Inmates reported feeling sick.

Jail staff moved the nine inmates housed out of the unit. Ionia Public Safety officers responded and identified a concentration of carbon monoxide.

The source was identified as a ventilation pipe on a boiler. The unit was shut down and crews finished repairs shortly after 6 a.m.

Inmates housed in the unit were taken outside for fresh air before being transported to U of M Ionia Hospital and Butterworth in Grand Rapids.
