SHAFTSBURY – The Select Board voted to lower the speed limit on Twitchell Hill from 35 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour at its meeting on Monday.
The action follows a speed study conducted by the Bennington County Regional Commission.
A group of residents of Twitchell Hill Road came to the Select Board with concerns about speeding in November 2024.
At that time the speed sign had recently been increased from 30 to 35 miles per hour. Investigation had shown that the speed limit was actually 35 MPH but had been mislabeled at 30.
The road’s steep grade increases speed and its dips obscure oncoming vehicles, making it challenging for residents to pull out of their driveways, one resident said last year.
