Another two beneficial use impairments could soon be lifted from the St. Clair River.
The river was identified as a binational Area of Concern in 1987 under the Canada-U.S. Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, due to urbanization and agricultural land uses degrading water quality and ecosystem health.
Of the nine beneficial use impairments identified, three remain, said Kelly Johnson, St. Clair River Remedial Action Plan Coordinator with the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority.
Of three other beneficial use impairments identified that were deemed not impaired but in need of further assessment, just one remains, she said.
“All the on-the-ground-work has been completed” to move all four to “not impaired,” she said.
