Danville police were asking motorists to use extreme caution driving along the Danville Expressway on Tuesday afternoon after a tractor-trailer hauling cattle overturned near the North Carolina line, allowing some bovines to escape.
The crash happened at about 10:30 a.m. when the vehicle flipped, allowing at least 20 cows loose near the exit heading into Caswell County, North Carolina.
"Multiple agencies and partners are on scene and enroute to secure the livestock that are known to be in the areas of the surrounding highways," authorities wrote in a statement shortly before 1:30 p.m.
The southbound exit from West Main Street was expected to be closed for what police called an "extended period of time" to round up the cattle.
The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital with serio
