PORTLAND, Ore. — A person drowned Monday after reportedly falling into Thor’s Well on the Oregon Coast near Cape Perpetua.

The natural feature is a 20-foot-wide pit known for a dramatic phenomenon: waves crash against the rocks and funnel water into the hole, creating a violent and dangerous surge.

Around 3:36 p.m. Monday, law enforcement dispatched to Thor's Well after receiving reports that a person had fallen into the water and appeared to be drowning. When they arrived, they quickly determined that a person was in the water, despite conflicting reports from witnesses.

However, due to the wave conditions and nature of the well, Yachats fire said, crews on the ground were not able to make recovery efforts. It's unclear whether the person was still alive at this point.
