BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) - With school back in session, spread of common illnesses is on the rise. A local provider shares tips to keep yourself and your little ones safe.

Providers tend to see increases in cold and flu cases at the start of each school year. Exposure can be tough to avoid in some situations. Nurse practitioner, Sandra Stack said there are steps you can take to reduce risk. It all starts with basic hygiene. "Wash your hands with soap and water. Use hand sanitizers as frequently as possible," she said. "Cough into your elbow or sneeze into your elbow to avoid spreading the germs." It is also important to make sure you aren't infecting others. Stack said to avoid crowds if you have a high fever or extremely congested cough.
