BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) -- The Birmingham City Council approved an ordinance authorizing the closure of 20th Avenue South to vehicular traffic near the intersection with Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard South, near the site of a new car wash that’s being built.
Their vote came after a public hearing in which a number of neighbors spoke out in favor of closing the road out of concern for safety on their street. However, this issue may not be settled just yet. The developer filed a lawsuit against the city and the city council in May of 2024 and the judge ruled in their favor, allowing them to proceed with plans to build the carwash.
The director of the city’s Department of Transportation said that the city approved the developer’s traffic study and recommended speed cushions be installed o
