NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — The New Bedford Board of Health rejected a controversial proposal Tuesday evening that would've allowed for the construction of a solid waste transfer facility in the city.

The $30 million facility would have processed up to 1,500 tons of waste daily within the city's industrial park. It also would have been owned and operated by South Coast Renewables, formerly known as Parallel Products.

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection greenlit the project over the summer, but it was up to the board to determine whether the proposed location for the facility was suitable.

The board voted down the plan after substantial public outcry regarding the proposed facility's close proximity to surrounding neighborhoods.
