GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WVLT) - The annual elk breeding season, also known as the rut, is now underway in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Park officials are reminding visitors to use extra caution and respect all wildlife regulations as elk can be unpredictable during this time.

During the rut, male elk experience heightened testosterone levels and are more likely to exhibit defensive behavior as they compete for dominance. Officials said they will charge or challenge anything they perceive as a threat, including people and vehicles.

Additionally, female elk remain protective of their calves, adding to the overall stress amongst elk herds.
