OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEVV) — Owensboro residents can now legally raise chickens within city limits for the first time in three decades.
The city council approved the measure with a 3-2 vote, introducing new guidelines and restrictions for backyard chickens.
Residents must keep their chickens and coops at least 40 feet from their homes and are limited to six female chickens.
Previously, some residents moved outside city limits to raise chickens, but the new ordinance allows them to do so by paying a $25 permit fee.
While the ordinance permits chickens, swine remain prohibited within the city.
Authorities tell 44News that more details on the ordinance will be released soon.
