Fort Wayne could soon turn a profit off energy it produces, which could limit future rate increases for City Utilities customers.
Fort Wayne City Council unanimously gave initial approval to two contracts that will allow NIPSCO to buy excess energy from City Utilities.
Since 2015, City Utilities has taken in more than 40,000 gallons of waste per day from homes, businesses and industry and converted it into methane. It has created more energy than the department needed and burnt the excess. Under the contract, NIPSCO would purchase that excess energy.
The nearly $5.2 million contract would build the pipeline that will transport converted natural gas from City Utilities to NIPSCO’s storage.
