HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Pyrrhotite is a naturally-occurring mineral that is causing the foundation under some Connecticut homes to crumble -- but a new study could weed out the root of the problem.

Pyrrhotite can be inadvertently mined from the ground, making its way into a home's foundation and eventually affecting the structure.

"It's a terrible crisis, it's really a natural disaster,” Michael Maglaras of Crumbling Foundations Solutions Indemnity Company (CFSIC) said.

Now, the United States Geological Survey will take to the sky to find this mineral in the ground. Over the next four months, a survey plane will fly around five states, including Connecticut. The plan is to map magnetic fields and natural radiation, which will expose the location of pyrrhotite deposits underground.
